Creating The Outdoor Space...

As our thoughts turn to getting back out on the water – and as we continue to observe “safer at home” advice – the look and feel of our exterior spaces has never been more important. While we may not have control over what is going on in the world beyond our passerelle or doorstep, we can curate our own exterior spaces that serve as a respite from the stresses of daily life. We can create and maintain emotional balance and find joy in a space in which we can unwind, recharge and escape.

As its name would suggest, the 100’ Nordhavn Serenity was a project for which I was asked to give a lot of thought to the exterior spaces. The owner wanted to have ample space for the whole family to use for dining and relaxation, so we focused on incorporating these elements into the flybridge. We installed a long dining table under the radar arch that could be served by the BBQ and wet bar also in this area. This allowed the boat deck aft to be a freeform space in which we positioned two large chairs to either side of a stunning fire pit. Here the owner and his wife could enjoy a drink while gazing aft while the rest of the family lounged in the jacuzzi tub or on the lounge chairs forward. You can read more about this unique project in our blog post Serenity: The Peace of Home.

Fixed Or Freestanding?

One of the biggest considerations in outfitting your exterior deck is the use of fixed versus freestanding furniture. I’ve always been a fan of freestanding wherever feasible so as to keep the space as multifunctional as possible.

On one of our current refit projects, the 161’ Trinity Stay Salty, the only built-in furniture on any of the four exterior spaces consist of a small built-in dinette on the upper deck and another in the foredeck. This allows for plenty of creativity and flexibility. To freshen up the exterior spaces, we will be incorporating luxurious and super sturdy loose furniture pieces to replace the all-weather wicker pieces currently on board. These new pieces are not only durable, they bring a beautifully elegant style and enhance this exterior space.

Rein In The Accessories...

Remember, when creating your outdoor space, let the surrounding scenery be your main decor. Apart from a few pops of color with throw pillows and some lanterns or glow balls for nighttime lighting, there is no need to over accessorize in this space. Remember, when the rain comes, everything needs to be stored quickly and easily, so “rein in” those accessories!
